Land Rover defines its Range Rover line of high-performance luxury SUVs as the "pinnacle of refined capability". An apt description. Top technology, profound know-how and inspired design go into every refined Range Rover model. The car-makers that invented the SUV know all about refined capability, and much else besides.

From Land Rover to Range Rover

The forerunner of the sophisticated Range Rover SUV was its heavy-duty, rough-and-ready big brother, the Land Rover. This curious, contrasting change of course was not a natural evolution in the art of car-making. The leap from the outdoor-life, farmer's-friend, military-style Land Rover to the luxury high-performance Range Rover was no logical development - perhaps a pinnacle of inspired capability...

Range Rover roots

It all began just after WWII when Maurice and Spencer Wilks, both engineers and motor-car enthusiasts, started making all-terrain, heavy-duty vehicles. The first technical drawing for the Land Rover was made in the sand on a beach in Anglesey, where the brothers were on holiday. In 1948, they started production. Maurice Wilks wanted to build basic work vehicles and was inspired by the US army Jeep, a basic vehicle indeed. He eliminated various defects that he found in the original Jeep and adjusted the design, making substantial improvements. His creation was the Land Rover, and the basic design remained virtually unchanged for twenty years. Then, the Range Rover arrived.

The first SUV

In 1970, the highly innovative Range Rover combined all-terrain four-wheel-drive and smooth on-road performance in equal measure. Add sumptuous design, princely comfort and cutting-edge technology (it was the first SUV with electronic traction control) and you have a glorious mix of chic luxury and rugged performance. Innovations continued to be developed, not only in technology but also in materials: fourth-generation Range Rovers were the first all-aluminium SUVs. Range Rover popularity increased gradually, and inspired publicity boosted the brand into chic circles in the 1980s.

“In Vogue”

After a Range Rover prototype appeared in fashion layouts in Vogue magazine in 1981, heightened interest in this good-looking vehicle rapidly expanded in fashionable and smart circles. The car began to be associated with sophisticated life-styles and high fashion. The new Range Rover was officially named the “In Vogue” Range Rover, and by 1983 it had become a stylish, trend-setting, desirable vehicle with lots of exclusive appeal.

It is also likely that many motorists will be captivated by the new Range Rover Evoque convertible when it is launched in 2016. The project has been some years in development (it started in 2012) and, as the first convertible SUV, it represents ground-breaking innovation. As interest in this new model is expected to be high, our buyers are standing ready to take care of those older Range Rovers, obliged to yield to innovation.

Range Rover "Evoque"

The Evoque is the newest jewel in the Range Rover collection. The latest Evoque model, recently released in its revised and enhanced configuration, is gaining popularity. New features (tailgate spoiler, new LED headlamps, etc.) have induced many Range Rover drivers to upgrade to the newer model. This is where we can be of assistance. We buy, and take great care of, prestige cars such as Range Rovers, looking after all the practicalities and paper-work. Simply complete our short enquiry form for more information.
