Morgan cars are unique, beautiful, surprising. Morgan is not a well-known luxury racing brand like Ferrari, nor is it a prestigious high-class statement like Rolls-Royce. It is, however, a niche brand that belongs in the same exclusive top-end category.

Vintage appeal

While out and about on Britain's roads, the cars that turn heads are either stately Rolls-Royces or Bentleys or striking Italian cars like Ferrari or Lamborghini, but it is the vintage look that attracts lingering admiring glances. Vintage cars can get even young people wondering why car-makers no longer produce such daring, dashing, darling designs. Today's cars (above-mentioned Rolls and Ferrari aside) are all rather similar, with very little charm, whereas historic cars possess a certain yesteryear atmosphere that enchants. This elusive vintage atmosphere can be re-captured, assembled and set in motion, and this is what Morgan does.

The Morgan Motor Company, est. 1910

Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan left his job with the railway to follow his passion for car building. He designed and built his first car in 1909 (the three-wheel Runabout), and then started his Morgan Motor Company. He ran it successfully until his death in 1959, then his son, Peter, carried on the business. To this day, the company is still a private family business, completely owned by the Morgan family.

Three and four wheelers

The first Morgan cars were classified as cycle-cars as they had only three wheels, which enabled them to avoid car tax. These early cars were mostly two-seaters although single-seat and four-seat versions were available. In 1913, a Morgan three-wheeler won the Cycle-car Grand Prix. The new F-series of three-wheelers was introduced in 1933; the more sporty version was the F-Super, produced in 1937. Three-wheeler production continued until 1952.

The first Morgan with four wheels arrived in 1936. In 1950, the larger Morgan +4 with a bigger engine was introduced, followed by the sporty +4+ with fibreglass coupé body. The long-lived Morgan +8 (1968) had a Rover V8 4-cylinder engine, subsequently updated with increasingly powerful Triumph engines, and production continued until 2004. This same year, the retro-look traditional-styled Roadster convertible was launched.

Modern-day Morgan motor-car construction continues according to tradition; each car is hand-made with skilled craftsmen using traditional materials. Typical Morgan cars have wooden frame-work with chassis in steel, although lately aluminium is increasingly used. Morgan designs, which are mostly from the 1930s-1950s, require aluminium, ash wood, leather and traditional manufacture. Coach-built car construction follows traditional methods, but car performance is enhanced by modern technology and software in order to observe all safety and testing regulations and ensure top engine performance.

Future Morgan

After the 2012 Morgan Plus-E electric concept car, an electric version of the three-wheeler is due to be launched at the end of 2016. High-tech, ecological future, wrapped up in a fascinating, 1930s-inspired, bullet-shaped, three-wheeled package. Truly unique!

From 2000 on, the magnificent Morgan Aero-8 series has been available in many versions. Especially noteworthy is the fifth-generation, 1960s-inspired, enhanced Aero-8, launched in 2015.
