In 1914, Alfieri Maserati and his brothers, all motoring enthusiasts, opened a garage/workshop in Bologna which had hardly got going when war broke out and the brothers were drafted. During the war their engineering expertise was put to work designing and making spark plugs for use in war-planes. The first Maserati racing cars did not appear until after the war, and in 1926 Maserati won its first race, and set its first speed record in 1929.
In 1920, Maserati was in sore need of a distinguishing logo to make Maserati sports cars stand out from the crowd. Something emblematic, exclusive and memorable was needed. The task of conjuring up such an icon fell to the artistic Maserati brother, Mario. He wandered out onto the square, the Piazza Maggiore, where the Bologna Maserati headquarters was located at the time. There he found the perfect symbol of strength, power and history: Neptune's trident
Alfieri Maserati died in 1932 and in 1937 the brothers sold the business to entrepreneur Adolfo Orsi who moved the factory to Modena, where it remains to this day. WWII saw the company return to spark plugs, but in 1946 Maserati, alongside racing cars, branched out into building Gran Turismo road-cars. High-performance, luxury finish and the contribution of designers like Pininfarina guaranteed success. In 1960, the Maserati "White Dame", a super-luxury Gran Turismo model especially enhanced for the Shah of Persia, amply demonstrated timeless Italian style.
Maserati, the renowned Italian sports car manufacturer, delivers exactly what it promises: "Ultra-luxury, high-performance automobiles with timeless Italian style". Maserati has been producing powerful racing cars and stylish luxury road-cars for over a hundred years, and they do it with true Italian flair.
Maserati was there, racing and winning, right from the start, when Formula One World Championship racing began in 1950. Maserati had already won important races during the 1930s and the Maserati 4CL racing car was still going strong. During the 1950s racing boom, Maserati designed three Formula One racing models and brought home nine victories for the factory team. Famous Maserati Formula One drivers include Tazio Nuvolari, Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio, one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time. After a last race in the Italian Grand Prix in 1957, Maserati retired from racing, returning only in 2003 with the single-marque championship, Trofeo Maserati.
