The Bayerische Motoren Werke was established consequent to re-organisation of the Rapp aircraft engine manufacturing company in 1916 in Bavaria, Germany. In 1918, the company was obliged to cease aircraft engine manufacture; it shifted production to motorcycles and, in 1928, started making motor-cars. The very first BMW motor-car was the Dixi, under licence to Austin Motors. 1962 saw the start of the successful BMW New Class line, with powerful four-cylinder M10 engines and independent suspension. The New Class models, in production until 1975, were four-door sedan and two-door coupé. An experimental two-door sports sedan proved popular and prompted the company to make larger, faster cars, which lead to the manufacture of sports-cars and racing-car engines.
Powerful BMW engines were the force behind much super-speed Formula One performance, with twenty Formula One racing victories for BMW-powered race-cars, along with 76 podium finishes and 33 pole positions. Many famous racing teams have enjoyed the power of BMW engines including Brabham, Arrows, Benetton and Williams, and racing-car drivers such as Montoya, Button and Vettel. Fast BMW driving machines have successfully participated in touring car championships and rally competition racing, and still do.
2013 saw the appearance of the first BMW plug-in all-electric car, the BMW i3. In 2014, the BMW i8 sports plug-in hybrid car was launched in Germany.
