Much of Porsche fascination lies in the man behind the brand, automobile constructor Ferdinand Porsche. Born in Maffersdorf, Austria, in 1875, at an early age he displayed outstanding technical skills. In 1897, he built an electric wheel-hub motor; the following year he developed the P1 C.2-Phaeton, the world's first electric car. After working for Daimler, he founded his own car-construction company in 1931. In 1934, he was contracted by the German government to produce the “people's car”, designing the original Volkswagen Beetle. In 1950, a year before his death, he built the Porsche 356 sports-car.
The Porsche automobile manufacturing company, Porsche AG, is owned by Volkswagen AG, which is in turn majority-owned by Porsche Automobil Holding SE. Although officially founded in Austria in 1931, the Porsche car-manufacturing activity started in Stuttgart, Germany, where it still has its headquarters. The official name of the company is “Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG”. The elaborate Porsche crest is the emblem of Stuttgart embedded in the Württemberg-Baden coat-of-arms.
In 1964, the company built what was to become a Porsche icon, the high-performing, distinctive and ageless Porsche 911, an air-cooled, rear-engined sports-car with a “boxer” engine. The 911 found favour with the general public and was a winning vehicle on race-tracks and in rallies. Over the years, the design has changed to accommodate new technology and some style changes, but the basic car is still there; the iconic 911 is in production and as popular as ever. The German Technical Inspection Association has officially declared it Germany's most reliable car.
Amongst all the big names in sports-car construction, Porsche has its exclusive niche, possessing a standing and a dimension that are uniquely its own. Instantly recognisable, on the road a Porsche turns as many heads as a Ferrari. How to explain its universal attraction? Alongside its high-performance engine, it is no doubt the typical Porsche styling with its sweeping, elegant lines that arouses admiration.
Sixth Porsche victory of the season: Porsche has won the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship in Bahrain, confirming its reputation for speed and high performance. Over the years, Porsche has produced many iconic, stylish, high-performing sports-cars/racing-cars, such as the Spyder 550 and the famous 911.
Porsche cars are renowned not only for speed, elegance and performance, but also for reliability. A 2014 Consumer Report reveals that the Boxster and the Cayman sports-cars are amongst the most reliable cars, and a Canadian survey reports that 97% of Porsche cars produced within the last 25 years are still on the road. The latest line of Porsche automobiles includes the 918 Spyder super-car, the four-door Panamera and the Cayenne and Macan SUVs, all elegant, fast and reliable. If you are tempted to upgrade to one of these new models, your old Porsche will be in good hands with us; we buy and carefully handle prestige cars, and take care of all the details.
