In 1918, the company was obliged to cease aircraft engine manufacture; it shifted production to motorcycles and, in 1928, started making motor-cars. The very first BMW motor-car was the Dixi, under licence to Austin Motors. 1962 saw the start of the successful BMW New Class line, with powerful four-cylinder M10 engines and independent suspension. The New Class models, in production until 1975, were four-door sedan and two-door coupé. An experimental two-door sports sedan proved popular and prompted the company to make larger, faster cars, which lead to the manufacture of sports-cars and racing-car engines.
